Meet Our Staff

James DeMarco | Owner

James started RunAbout in 2003 in downtown Blacksburg. After three years, RunAbout moved to the University Mall where it stayed for ten years. In 2015, RunAbout moved to its third home at First and Main in the up-and-coming shopping district in South Main, Blacksburg.

James started running as a sophomore in high school in Anchorage, Alaska. He ran in college at South Dakota State where he earned All-America honors and helped his team to an NCAA Division II team national title in cross country. James was a volunteer cross country and track coach with Virginia Tech while taking classes at VT and trying to get RunAbout Sports open. James started coaching the boys and girls cross country, indoor, and outdoor track and field teams at Blacksburg High School shortly thereafter. Since his arrival, James’ teams have won 24 state championships with an additional 13 state runners-up distinctions, with three teams ranked in the top ten of the United States. He has been named the United State Southeast Coach of the Year and a national finalist, Virginia Coach of the Year four times, and the Roanoke Times has named him the Timesland Coach of the Year numerous times. The Roanoke Times has called James the most successful coach in Timesland history. In 2015, the track facility at Blacksburg High School was named the James DeMarco Track of Dreams.

James has also directed many of the area’s top events, including the Hokie Half Marathon, Mountains of Misery, and the High Performance Distance Academy.

Stephen Howard | Store Manager

Stephen grew up in Blacksburg, Virginia and graduated from Blacksburg High School. He ran cross country, indoor, and outdoor track throughout his time at BHS under James DeMarco. Stephen then went on to work at RunAbout Sports from 2005-2010 while acquiring a Bachelors of Science in Biology at Virginia Tech. During his time at Virginia Tech, Stephen coached the distance track team at Blacksburg Middle School from 2006-2010, and was an assistant coach at Blacksburg High for cross country and track from 2009-2010. After graduating, Stephen moved to South Korea where he married his lovely wife Hannah. He and his wife returned to the States in 2011, where upon their return, Stephen became a Herpetology Zookeeper at the Virginia Aquarium in Virginia Beach. From 2014-2015 he continued his venture into Herpetology and moved to Texas to work at the Dallas Zoo where he specialized in working with a variety of reptiles including vipers, cobras, Komodo dragons, and crocodilians. Stephen and his wife are very happy to return to their hometown of Blacksburg with their daughter Charlotte, and unnamed baby-to-be that they are expecting in May 2016. Stephen loves hiking, caving, Frisbee golf, cliff diving, swimming, and talking with people. At RunAbout, Stephen assists in overseeing day-to-day operations and specializes in event coordination, and is extremely happy to be back working in the store he knows and loves!

Caman Skelton | Events Manager

Caman has been an employee at RunAbout Sports since June 2011, and is an expert in running gait analysis.  He ran cross country and track and field for Blacksburg High School from 2007-2011.  Now Caman attends Virginia Tech and studies biological sciences.  His favorite track event is the 1600, and his favorite race is the 5k.  He has been a head coach for the Youth Track league for four summers (2010 – 2013) and was an assistant coach for the Blacksburg Middle School track team in the Spring of 2012.  Caman completed a through-hike of the Appalachian Trail, which he started March 23rd of 2014, and complete the 2185 mile journey on August 15th.  His favorite part of the trail was eating too much candy every day, and accepting car rides to town from strangers.

Kate Buss | Sales Associate

Kate grew up in Blacksburg and also ran for James at Blacksburg High School. She was on multiple state champion teams in cross country and track, as well as part of the team that went to Nike Cross Nationals in 2009. After high school, she attended Brown University where she studied biophysics and ran cross country and track. However, after five semesters, she transferred to Virginia Tech where she now studies Human, Nutrition, Foods, and Exercise and races her bike, and competes in the occasional triathlon.

Caroline Honeycutt | Sales Associate

Along with many of our employees, Caroline was raised in Blacksburg and competed for the Blacksburg High School track team. During her time on the team she was a part of multiple state-championship teams. Caroline now attends Virginia Tech where she hopes to discover her next chapter. She also helps coach the hurdlers at Dublin Middle School. In addition to running, Caroline enjoys snow skiing, horseback riding and Netflix.

Matthew Pasier | Sales Associate

Matthew moved to Blacksburg, Virginia going into his sixth grade year. In his high school days he competed for James at Blacksburg High School and his highlight was attending Nike Cross Country Nationals as a senior. He attended VMI and continued running there for a while, but transferred and now attends NRCC as a sophomore with plans to attend Virginia Tech in the fall. His goal is to become a physcial therapist. As a Runabout Employee he mostly spends his hours as a sales associate, but has been sighted on local 5k courses helping out as well. He has a passion for fantasy football and snapchat.

Bryce Altizer | Sales Associate

Bryce was born and raised in Floyd, Virginia where he was taught to love the sport of running by his father. After first meeting James through a summer running program during his 6th grade year, he went on to run cross country for Floyd High School where he was able to help lead his team to a school-best state runner-up finish his senior year. Bryce also enjoyed running indoor and outdoor track, garnering multiple all-state performances throughout his career. One of his favorite races was helping to break his school’s 4x800m relay record during his senior year after running an 11 second personal best. Bryce now attends Virginia Tech where he is currently enrolled in the University Studies, figuring out what he wants to pursue.

Matthew Howard | Web Development and Graphic Design

Another local product, Matt was raised in Blacksburg where he competed for James at Blacksburg High School. In addition to winning multiple state titles and garnering two All-America nods, he was a member of the 4xmile relay team which won a national title in 2010, the first for any sport in Blacksburg history. After graduating, Matt continued his running career at Georgetown University where he graduated in 2014 with a degree in biology. and was a multiple-time all-conference performer and three-time Academic All-American. Matt currently trains post-collegiately with hopes of qualifying for the 2016 Olympic Trials in the steeplechase. In addition to working in the store during summer breaks, Matt works primarily on RunAbout’s web development and graphic design. He also helps organize and direct the High Performance Distance Academy each summer. When he’s not studying or training, Matt also enjoys photography and playing as much volleyball as possible.

Alex Wells Event Staff

Alex, like many of our employees, grew up here in Blacksburg, Virginia. He ran for James at Blacksburg High School and has developed a love for running and the outdoors over the years. Alex currently attends Virginia Tech where he is studying Biological Systems Engineering, and hopes to one day use his degree to make a difference in the availability of clean drinking water throughout the world. Alex works in the store from time to time, but is mostly involved in local races and events throughout the year including Youth Track League, Kids Run the Nation, and the Thursday Night Race Series. At Tech he is a member of the VT Running Club and competes in 8K races throughout the fall. In his spare time Alex enjoys playing ultimate frisbee and hiking/camping.
